Raymond built a better boat
As his confessor, Raymond of Peñafort naturally accompanied James the Conqueror on an expedition to Mallorca, which the king had recently conquered. They traveled to the Balearic island with some members of the royal court and, much to Raymond’s dismay, the king’s mistress.
Raymond begged him to send her home, but the king refused. So Raymond said fine, he’d go. When the king refused to grant him permission to leave — let alone a ship for the voyage — Raymond took off his long black cloak, gently lay it atop the ocean, rigged the corner to his walking staff, and set sail for home.
