Merry Christmas, Eugenia/o
[183-258]
Eugenia’s father was a governor of Egypt, a life she wanted no part in. She rejected every suitor that came to their house. Intent on preserving her virginity, she cut off her hair, put on men's clothing, and entered life in a monastery, where she lived as a man named Eugenios.
Once upon a time, Eugenios cured a townswoman’s illness with the sign of the cross. The woman was still possessed, though, and tried to seduce him. He rebuffed her, so she turned the tables and accused him of rape, punishable by death.
At the trial, to prove he was innocent, Eugenios ripped open his cloak. His life was spared, but, after this indignity, he returned to dressing as a woman. That’s what he did until he was beheaded one Christmas.
