Jerome Emiliani, kind of cliché but ok
[1486-1537]
Jerome was chained up in jail when he prayed to the Virgin Mary for help—the first time he’d ever done so—and she loosened the locks. He snuck his way right to the church, where he hung his actual shackles from the altar as an offering. The patron saint of orphans, he became a prolific aid to the poor. I especially like this line about him, from 1909: “he dressed the corrupt wounds of the village folk with such success that it was though he had received the gift of healing.”
