Ambrose loved bees
[337-397]
When Ambrose was a baby, his father discovered a swarm of bees covering the sleeping infant’s head. Rather than sting him, though, they dropped a bit of honey on Ambrose’s tongue and peacefully flew away. He was destined to have a sweet voice — and he was the creator of the antiphonal chant, basically the first call-and-response. Today, in Dover, Delaware, third-generation beekeepers at S&S Apiaries tend to 4 million bees, whose honey they harvest and sell, in $3 little bear jars, to parishioners at a certain St. Ambrose Church.
