Alkelda's lost well

Alkelda was an Anglo-Saxon princess about whom almost nothing is known, except that she was strangled by Danish women. Still, it’s in her name that the only holy well in Britain is dedicated. From a square opening in a stone wall in Middleham, its water used to heal people’s eyes. Now, surrounded by houses, the well runs dry.
