A love story: Gwladys ferch Brychan and Gwynllyw Filwr
[6th c.]
Princess Gwladys ferch Brychan was said to be so elegant that Gwynllyw Filwr didn't need to meet her to request her hand in marriage. But rather than doing it himself, he sent messengers to ask permission from her father; insulted, the king refused. But Gwynllyw was determined. He amassed an army of 300 men, aided by King Arthur himself, to successfully steal her away.
Fitting of their first meeting, the couple led turbulent and violent lives. They were roving bandits, but after they had a son, Cadoc, he set them on a holy path. Cadoc convinced his parents to become hermits together — and then, when they wouldn't stop sleeping together, to separate and start monasteries on their own. In hers, she died alone.
